Gibson Street Baths

This former municipal washhouse and baths is located on the corner of Gibson Street and New Bridge Street in Newcastle, next to St Dominic's Priory Church. Gibson Street Baths were built in 1907 and designed by F H Halford. The baths had separate men's and women's entrances and is notable for its ornate tiles and  glazed, domed ceiling. During the Second World War the pool was used by the Fire Service as a reservoir, for water used to put out fires caused by air raids.[1] The baths were closed in 1965 and the swimming pool was later boarded over, with the 485 m2 main hall being used for badminton courts, until the summer of 2016, when Newcastle City Council put the building up for sale. The former baths are a Grade II listed building. Timeline
