Elswick Lead Works

Elswick Lead WorksThe lead works were founded in 1778 as 'Walker, Fishwick and Ward'; the first manufacturer of white lead on Tyneside. The initial 2 acre site included a melting house, wash house, brew-house, a windmill, and worker's accommodation. Paint manufacture started in 1779. The lead works expanded significantly during the late 1780s and 1790s to produce red lead, lead shot, and rolled sheet lead. The Elswick Shot Tower was completed in 1797 and remained in use until 1951. The Shot tower and numerous chimneys on the site dominated the local skyline, until the tower was demolished in 1968-9.
