Eden Bridge
Eden Bridge in Carlisle is a road bridge over the River Eden connecting the city centre to Stanwix to the north. The bridge, with 5 segmental arches, was built 1812-1815, for the County of Cumberland, designed by Robert Smirke. Abutments project at either side of the bridge on the south and the north-west, but those on the north-east side were replaced by steps, as an entrance to Rickerby Park. Cut onto the south-west abutment are various flood dates and levels, includng DEC 13TH 1852 and 1857. A pedestrian tunnel was cut through on the south side of the bridge in 1902, as part of the riverside walk into Bitts Park. In 1932, the bridge was widened by Percy Dalton, City Engineer.[1] The bridge is Grade I listed on the National Heritage List for England.
The remains of an earlier 16th century bridge and its piling were uncovered under the arches in the river bed during dredging in 1951. Interestingly, the current Eden Bridge was one of a pair of bridges built together, but the southern channel of the river was left dry and gradually filled. The southern bridge was demolished in 1969-1970, to make way for the inner ring road.
