Dixons Chimney, Shaddon Mill, Carlisle
Dixons Chimney is a prominent landmark in Carlisle, located on the corner of Shaddongate and Junction Street. The chimney was built in 1836 to serve Shaddon Mill, which was owned by Peter Dixon. The chimney is now 82 metres tall, but it had previously been taller; the chimney was damaged by a lightning strike in 1931 and for safety reasons, it was necessary to remove the top 10 metres in 1950.[1] Dixons Chimney is Grade II* listed on the National Heritage List for England. Dixons Chinmey had been threatened by demolition, but was restored with funding from Heritage England, the Lottery Fund and Carlisle City Council; the renovated chimney was unveiled by Trudy Whalley, former Mayor of Carlisle, on 14th January, 1999.
