Church of the Divine Unity, Ellison Place

The former Church of the Divine Unity is located on Ellison Place, Newcastle. The Unitarian church and attached meeting room (Durant Hall) was built 1938-1940. The meeting room was named after Unitarian minister, Rev. William Durant, who died in 1681 at a time when those with "non-conformist" beliefs were persecuted.[1] This church opened on Sunday, 21st January, 1940. The building was designed by Cackett, Burns Dick & Mackellar, in an Art Deco style. The church furniture, made of English oak, had a striking wave design. This was probably the last Art Deco building to be built in Newcastle. The church and meeting room are Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for Newcastle. Durant Hall, became renowned as a lecture hall and function room. The building was up for sale or redevelopment in the 2000's.
