St Mary's Church


St Mary's is the Anglican parish church for Heworth, Pelaw, Bill Quay and Wardley, located to the east of Gateshead on Shields Road, near Heworth Metro.[1] The church, designed by it's rector, John Hodgson. It was built in 1822 by John Stokoe[2], on the site of an ancient church. The 92 men and boys who died in the 1812 disaster at Felling Colliery are buried in the churchyard at St Mary's. St Mary's Church is a Grade II Listed building on the National Heritage List for England..
