Church of St John the Evangelist, Barrow Island

The Church of St John the Evangelist is located on Island Road on Barrow Island in Barrow-in-Furness. The distinctive Byzantine-style church, by Paget and Seeley, was built with ferroconcrete with concrete and has green slate roofs. The foundation stone of this church was laid on the 15th  December 1934 and the completed church was consecrated on the 28th of September 1935. It replaced an earlier church of 1879; the wooden pulpit, choir stalls with carvings designed by Clifford Green, and other interior fittings from the original building are used in the present church. St John's is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England. St John's works in partnership with St Mary's Church on Walney Island, and as part of Barrow Mission community.
