Blackies Valley / Little Dene

Little Dene (also known as Blackies Valley) in Newcastle was the valley formed by a small stream which flowed eastwards from Town Moor to join the Ouse Burn near Matthew Bank. Much of the valley has been filled in and the stream culverted, major infilling of the west of the valley was completed in c.1962.[1] Before local government reorganisation in 1973, Little Dene formed the boundary between Newcastle and Gosforth, which was then in Northumberland.[2] The Little Dene is evident in names around the area; the stream flowed below the Great North Road at "Little Bridge", and there is "Little Moor" (with Little Moor Allotments) to the north-east of Town Moor. "Little Moor Flats" were built on the site of a large house called "Little Dene" on Lodore Road, which was built near the end of the culvert over the stream. A remaining part of the valley remains, by Lodore Road, as a green open space in High West Jesmond known as "The Valley and Little Dene".[3]

Approximate location! (these flats called "Little Dene" are built near a culvert over the stream). Directly to the east of these are a green area which is The Valley and Little Dean.
