No. 31 Mosley Street, Newcastle

No. 31 Mosley Street in Newcastle (Scottish Provident House) is located on the junction of Mosley Street and Cloth Market. It was built in 1906, by S. D. Robbins of Newcastle as offices for the Scottish Provident Institution. Scottish Provident was founded in Edinburgh in 1837 as a mutual life assurance trust. In the late 19th and early 20th century it expanded across the UK, establishing major regional branches, including in Newcastle and Belfast. The company was acquired by Abbey National in 2000. The building here is notable as being the first to use of Portland Stone in central Newcastle. It is also said to have been the first 'gridiron' (steel frame) construction in Newcastle. Scottish Provident House is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. Today, the ground floor of the building hosts Flares bar and nightclub.
