Scottish Provident House, Mosley Street, Newcastle

  • Description

Bombastic but irresistible. By S.D. Robbins, 1906, and supposedly the first "American-type gridiron structure in Newcastle". Clad in Portland stone except for the granite plinth. A procession of fluted Corinthian columns (NZ2464 : Detail of Scottish Provident House, Mosley Street, Newcastle (1)), balusters along the top, and a variety of window styles and shapes. The ground floor has attractive window-guards (NZ2464 : Detail of Scottish Provident House, Mosley Street, Newcastle (2)). Grade II listed. Partly occupied by a nightclub, Flares.
