WW1 Memorial Cross, Durham Cathedral

This memorial cross, by Palace Green on the east side of Durham Cathedral, commemorates those from County Durham lost in the First World War. The memorial, in the form of a stylised cross of St Cuthbert, was built from 1926-8, designed by Professor C.H. Reilly, and carved by Herbert Tyson Smith.[1] A ceremony was held on the 24th November 1928, in which the memorial was unveiled by Lord Londonderry.[2] The memorial is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.[3]
