Windlestone

Windlestone is located about 3½miles east of Bishop Auckland and 1 mile west of Chilton, in County Durham. In Medieval times, Windlestone was a manor and a village was recorded here in the 12th century. The village was cleared to create parkland in the early 19th century and the old hall demolished to be replaced by the present Windlestone Hall. Windlestone was the seat of the Eden family; Sir Anthony Eden, Prime Minister 1955-1957, was born at Windlestone Hall in 1897. In addition to the hall, there are a number of residences to the west of it. Also, there are a terrace of houses and a nursery and garden centre on Windlestone Lane, north of the hall. Historically, Windlestone was a township in the ancient parish of St. Andrew Auckland. From 1866, the township became Windlestone Civil Parish.
