War Memorial

The gothic style Lych gate at St. Cuthbert’s Church was built as a memorial dedicated to the people of Allendale who lost their lives in the First World War. 'For God, King, and Country' is cared on the gable ends and there are further inscriptions in the gate, including the names of 22 local men who lost their lives in the war. The monument was unveiled on the 1st of August 1920 by Viscountess Allendale.[1] Later the memorial was also dedicated to the 2 who lost their lives in the Second World War. The seats and gates were removed because of vandalism. In 2006 War Memorials Trust made a grant of £2,900 towards the restoration of the lych gate.[2] The memorial is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
