Walney Ferry

Historically, there were several fords and roads across the Walney Channel, passable at low tide, connecting Walney Island to Barrow Island and Piel Island. However, most of these became impassable when the Furness Railway Company deepened the Walney Channel when building a new harbour and docks in the late 1860s/70s. Under the threat of legal action, the Furness Railway Company agreed to run a steam ferry between Barrow Island and Walney; the steam ferry service began on the 30th of June, 1878, and ran from 5am until midnight. The Ferry Hotel was situated close to the Walney Ferry landing. In addition there were other smaller passenger ferries run by other operators. The ferries became redundant after the Walney (Jubilee) Bridge was built in 1908.
