The Turnbull, Newcastle

What is now known as 'The Turnbull', located on Queen's Lane in Newcastle, was built in 1888 By F. W. Rich for Robert Robinson and Co., a stationery wholesaler and printers. A south block was added in 1897 and a tower in 1898. It was built on land that had once belonged to a medieval Carmelite monastery, which stood just inside the Town Wall, between Clavering Place and the Long Stairs. In 1961 the building was acquired by E. & F. Turnbull Ltd and used as a warehouse, sharing it with Peacocks' Surgical & Medical Equipment Ltd. The company name was displayed on the building, which is a prominent feature on the Newcastle skyline, opposite the Castle Keep. As such, it was widely known as 'Turnbull's Warehouse', it was used as a warehouse up to the late 1990s. In 2001, the building was converted into 48 Manhattan-style loft and penthouse apartments. During this redevelopment, pottery and other artifacts dating as far back as the 12th century were uncovered. The Turnbull is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England.
