Tullie House, Carlisle

Tullie House and gardens are located on Abbey Street in Carlisle and form part of The Tullie museum and gallery complex. There has been a substantial house on this site since the 13th century, the original building was called the 'White Hall' and was occupied by the Tullie family from 1624. The old hall was pulled down and the current Tullie House was built in 1689 for Thomas Tullie, Chancellor of Carlisle (1684 - 1716), and Dean (1716-1726). The house was subsequently occupied by, the Waugh, Crist, Salkeld and Dixon families. Then in 1871 it was purchased by Mr. Thompson, and in part used as a drapery warehouse.  After being saved from demolition in 1890, the house was extended and opened as Tullie House Public Library, Museum and Art Gallery. It was opened to the public by Mayor, James Atkinson Wheatley, on the 8th November 1893. Notable extensions to the house include the stables and coach house on Abbey Street and the tower and gatehouse on Castle Street. Tullie House and these notable extensions ate Grade I listed on the National Heritage List for England. The walls, gate and railings in front of the house on Abbey Street are separately Grade I listed.
