Tullie (museum & gallery)

Tullie is a museum, art gallery, community hub in Carlisle, with it's main entrance on Castle Street. It opened as Tullie House Public Library, Museum and Art Gallery in 1893. It incorporates the original Tullie House of 1689, on Abbey Street, which was built by Thomas Tullie, Chancellor of Carlisle. Carlisle Corporation saved the house from demolition in 1890 and significanty extended it, including the tower and gatehouse on Castle Street. It was opened to the public by Mayor, James Atkinson Wheatley on the 8th November 1893. There have been several other extensions to the Tullie, including The Rotunda on Annetwell Street and the underground Millennium Gallery which opened in 2001. The Tullie is undergoing a £4.5m programme of refurbishments, including fit-for-purpose learning and community spaces, is scheduled to reopen in the Summer of 2024.
