Tithe Barn, Carlisle


The former Tithe barn for the Augustinian Priory of St Mary is located on West Walls by Heads Lane in Carlisle. It was built in the c.1470s for Thomas Gondibour, Prior from 1465 to 1507. The south elevation fronts onto Heads Lane and has a 3ft 7ins thick sandstone wall. It functioned as a tithe barn until the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII, and then has had varied used as a stable, dispensary, dwelling house, and joiner's shop. It was in 1824 the two eastern bays of the barn were converted for use as the Carlisle Dispensary. After a period of being semi derelict, the building was restored from 1969-1971, having being saved from demolition in 1965 by the Carlisle and District Civic Trust and is now used as a church Hall for St Cuthbert's Church. The Tithe Barn is Grade I listed on the National Heritage List for England.
