Thrislington

Thrislington is an area located to the east of Ferryhill and south of Cornforth, in County Durham. Thrislington was first recorded in 1262 [1]; historically, Thrislington was a township in the ancient parish of Bishop's-Middleham. Thrislington Colliery (aka West Conforth Colliery) operated from 1835-1967. At it's peak, in 1947, the colliery employed 1,155 (867 working below ground, and 288 above ground).[2] Today, much of the area is used by Tarmac's Thrislington Quarry and concrete works; to the south of this is Thrislington Plantation National Nature Reserve, an area of limestone grassland, which is an SSSI.
