The Turf Inn, Newark Road, Carlisle

The Turf is a public house and restaurant located on Newark Road in Carlisle. It was originally built 1839-1840 as the Grandstand hotel for Carlisle Racecourse here, with an extension by Daniel Birkett in 1874. The racecourse closed and moved to Blackwell in 1904 and this continued as a pub with a bowling green on the original paddock. It was run under the Carlisle and District State Management Scheme from 1916 until it was purchased in 1972, but was left unoccupied and ruinous until renovated in 1988. This is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England.
