The Mayfair
The Mayfair in Newcastle opened as a ballroom on 12th September 1961. With its large hall, the Mayfair could hold up to 1,500 people, and had a resident band. The entrance to the Mayfair was on the corner of Newgate Street and Low Friar Street. Later the Mayfair became a major concert venue, hosting may upcoming bands in the late 1960's and 70s. Notably, Led Zeppelin's first UK concert was at the Mayfair on th 4th October 1968. Changing with the times, it was used as Rock Disco and later still a Rave venue. The building was demolished in 1999 to be replaced by the Gate leisure complex.
