The Kings Head, Carlisle

The Kings Head on Fisher Street is reputed to be the oldest public house in Carlisle. The present building dates from the 17th Century (with later modifications), but it is understood to be on a site which has been occupied by a hostelry as far back as the 10th century. It was officially established as The Kings Head Inn in 1829, with Mr. James Sawyer, a veteran of the Peninsular War and the Battle of Waterloo, as its proprietor. The pub came under the control of the State Management Scheme in 1916. After the Scheme ended, The Kings Head was acquired by John Smiths in 1973.
