The Keelman & Big Lamp Brewery, Newburn
The Keelman public house & Big Lamp Brewery are located on Grange Road in Newburn. The buildings are a former Victorian water pumping station. The Big Lamp Brewery moved here, from Summerhill Street in Newcastle, in 1996. The pub is named after the Keelmen who once worked on the nearby River Tyne.
Newburn Pumping Station was built 1854-1855. The station was built by R.Cail for the Whittle Dene Water Company under engineer Robert Nicholson. The works were designed to improve the water supply, by taking water from gravel beds, following the 1853 Cholera epidemic, in which the water supply was implicated. The former pumping station buildings are Grade II on the National Heritage List for England.
