The Abbey and Cathedral Precinct, Carlisle

Carlisle Cathedral precinct has a long history of occupation; it was within the Roman town (excavations immediately outside the cathedral in 1983 established that the precinct contains well-preserved deposits of Roman origin)[1]. An Augustinian priory was founded here in 1122 and became a cathedral priory in 1133. The cathedral and many of the precinct buildings are still in use by the Church of England. The precinct includes a street called 'The Abbey'. Carlisle Cathedral precinct is a scheduled monument.
