Statue of James Steel, Carlisle


A statue of James Steel stands on the west side of English Street in Carlisle. James Steet (1797 - 1851) was an editor of the Carlisle Jornal and later ran the paper. He was also a councillor between 1836 and 1851, and held the position of Mayor of Carlisle in 1845 and 1846. The statue was by William Frederick Woodington (1806-1893). It was unveiled in 1859 and was originally located in the Market Place. It was moved to English Street in 1989. The statue is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
