Statue of Francis Aglionby
The statue of Francis Aglionby is located on Earl Street in Carlisle. The statue was designed by the renound sculptor, Musgrave Lewthwaite Watson, and erected in 1843. It originallystood in the grand entrance hall to the Criminal Court. When the new Crown Court building was opened in 1992 the statue was moved to a new pedestal outside its main entrance. The statue is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
Francis Aglionby was a Whig politician, elected as MP for Cumberland Eastern in 1837. He was also a Major in the Cumberland militia. Aglionby served as Chairman of the Cumberland Quarter Sessions, which were quarterly meetings of local Justices of the Peace, held for administrative and judicial purposes. He held that office from 1818 until he fell dead (of natural causes) in 1840, while entering the court.
