Stanhope Ford and Stepping Stones

In 2012 a public enquiry recommended the permanent closure of Stanhope Ford to vehicles. The ford through the River Wear at Stanhope was closed by police under emergency powers in 2008 following the rescuing of motorists stranded in the river.[1] The sign by the ford recommends motorists take the B6278 road, which crosses the Wear via the nearby Stanhope Bridge.
