Skiddaw Building, Carlisle

The Skiddaw Building in Carlisle is one of the principle buildings of the Fusehill Street Campus of the University of Cumbria. The building was originally the Union Workhouse (the Fusehill Workhouse), built 1863-1864, designed by Lockwood & Mawson (architects).[1] It was used as a hospital during the First World War. During the 1920s it was known as Fusehill House Poor Law Institution then in 1930 was renamed the Fusehill House Public Assistance Institution.[2] The building was again used as a military hospital during the Second World War. It then became Carlisle City General Hospital under the 1948 National Health Act. The City General Hospital and adjacent Carlisle City Maternity Hospital closed in 1999, when hospital care was consolidated at the new Cumberland Infirmary. The Fusehill site then became the Carlisle campus of St. Martin’s College. The college then became part of the University of Cumbria when it was established in 2007.[3] The Skiddaw Building is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
