Shotton, Northumberland

Shotton is a hamlet, located about 9 miles north of Newcastle and 1 mile south-east of the village of Stannington. There are two rows of cottages and several other houses, and Shotton North Farm and Shotton South Farm are located on respective sides of Shotton Lane. South Shotton House dates from c.1800, with a late C19th rear wing; North Shotton farmhouse dates from the late 18th century - both are listed buildings on the National Heritage List for England. To the east of the settlement, the lane was truncated, with the development of Shotton Surface Mine, which operated from 2008 to 2020. After the coal was extracted, the open-cast site, which was over 400 hectares, was restored and landscaped by Banks Mining Ltd - who developed the nearby Northumberlandia land sculpture, using 1.5 million tonnes of earth from the open-cast site. Historically, Shotton with Plessey was a township in the ancient parish of Stannington. Today, Shotton forms part of Stannington Civil Parish
