Shotton Surface Mine (2008 - 2020)

Shotton Surface Mine, located to the east of Shotton in Northumberland, on the estate of Blagdon Hall. The open-cast coal mine opened in 2008, by the Banks Group. In 2012, the nearby Northumberlandia land sculpture, designed by Charles Jencks, was built using 1.5 million tonnes of waste earth from the open-cast site. After the coal, shale and fireclay was extracted, the mine ceased production in 2020. The open-cast site, which is over 400 hectares, was restored and landscaped.
