Senhouse Roman Museum
Senhouse Roman Museum is located at The Battery on Sea Brows in Maryport. The museum occupies part of the site of Alauna - the Roman fort and and civilian town lying along the coastal ridge on the north side of Maryport. It's collection of Roman artifacts was started in 1570 by John Senhouse, Lord of the Manor of Ellenborough, who collected inscribed stones from Alauna, which was on the lands of his manor house.
The museum building was originally constructed by the Admiralty in 1885 as a naval gunnery training centre; know as "The Battery". It was converted for use as a museum in 1990. The building is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
