Heathery Cleugh Bridge, Lanehead

  • Description

"Built around 1810, this elegant bridge takes the main A689 road over the deep valley of Heathery Cleugh just north of Killhope Burn. Keys to the Past http://www.keystothepast.info/durhamcc/K2P.nsf/K2PDetail?readform&PRN=D14479 describes its construction as irregular courses of squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and rubble coping. Five very tall segmental-headed arches on tapered piers have two rows of voussoirs [the wedge-shaped stones forming the curved parts of an arch]. Parapets have coping of round vertical stones."
