Our Lady & Saint Joseph's Church, Carlisle

Our Lady & Saint Joseph's Catholic Church is located on Warwick Road in Carlisle. The foundation stone was laid on the 18th of May 1891, on land belonging to the Duke of Devonshire. The building, designed by by Dunn, Hansom and Dunn of Newcastle, cost £10,000 and opened in 1893.[1] The Church was refurbished internally, and re-consecrated on the 5th August 1952. The main entrance to the Church was extended in 1991. The church is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
The catholic parish was established in 1800, when Fr Joseph Marshall was appointed to raise a mission in Carlisle. Mass was held in St. Mary’s Chapel, West Walls, in premises owned by the Fairbairn family. To cater for the growing population of Carlisle, a larger church was built on Chapel St. dedicated to St. Mary and St. Joseph in 1824. This in turn was replaced by the present Church for Our Lady & St Joseph’s in 1893.[2] Today, St. Mary and St. Joseph's is one of six catholic churches serving the Carlilse area in The Parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, which was formed on the 1st November 2020.
