Old Spa Well, nr Haydon Bridge

Haydon Spa is located about 1 mile east of Haydon Bridge, situated in Spa Well Wood, near the south bank of the River Tyne. The spa is a natural warm sulphurous spring. In 1863 the spring was enclosed by a rectangular stone wall, now with cast iron railings on 3 sides, and steps down from the riverside path. A stone cornice above the well is inscribed  "A. JUNE 6TH 1863. D". The spa was damaged by a landslide in 1897; a granite plaque on the spa well is inscribed "Restored by public subscription in commemoration of her majesty's  Diamond Jubilee 1897." In 2001 the spa was again damaged by flooding/landslips, after which a new path and protective wall was installed. Haydon Spa Well is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. There is a sign for Haydon Spa by a layby on the A69 road.
