No. 1, Castle Street, Carlisle
No.1, Castle Street, on the corner with Finkle Street, in Carlisle hosts the Castle Hairdressing Room. The building dates from the mid-1890's, after an earlier house here was demolished in 1892 to widen Finkle Street. It was originally built for WM Hill and Sons, painters. No.1 does not appear in Kelly's Cumberland Directory, 1894, but was there by 1897.[1] No.1 Castle Street is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. Interestingly, "EWS" can still be seen painted on the building's wall on Finkle Street - a sign from the Second World War to direct to a nearby Emergency Water Supply, in case of fires caused by bombing.[2]
