Longbenton High School

Longbenton High School is located on Hailsham Avenue in Benton, Newcastle. The school has about 820 students aged 11 to 18.[1] It initially opened in September 1953 as Thomas Addison Boys School (West Wing) and Thomas Addison Girls School (East Wing). Later these were merged into a single co-educational organisation known as Longbenton High School. It was subsequently renamed Longbenton Community College. In 2016 a new school building was opened, located between the East and West wing buildings, which were subsequently demolished. When the new building opened, the school was renamed as Longbenton High School.

Longbenton High School is a large secondary school located in Benton, North Tyneside, England. Operating under the two-tier system in North Tyneside, the school takes students from age 11-18. It was a specialist Technology College, and has advanced ICT facilities and a City Learning Centre (see below) with some facilities for non-LBCC students.

Longbenton High School was part of the North-West Cluster, which also includes George Stephenson High School and Seaton Burn College. The school was known as Longbenton Community College until September 2016 when a complete new build was opened in the middle of the existing site. At this time the name changed back to Longbenton High School which is what it had been back in the 1980s. All of the old buildings have been demolished and the new school has state of the art facilities, offering a full and varied curriculum.

The school serves its local community but attracts students from across the north west of North Tyneside and the east of the city of Newcastle. The school has a strong reputation for academic excellence and high standards within performing arts. The new facilities in the new school include all newly laid sporting pitches; the old LCC struggled with poorly drained and uneven fields.

History

The school was originally built in, and opened officially for the new year in September 1953. It was originally named after Thomas Addison and the girls and boys were kept separate. What is now East was the girls' side, and what is now West was the boys' side. What is now the HMT block was the girls canteen. At some point, likely in the 1960s, the school was turned into a mixed college and became known as Longbenton High School.

Some time ago the school decided to reach out into the community and started adult teaching classes, often outside of school hours. It then became known as Longbenton Community High School. Eventually that became Longbenton Community College. As of September 2016, it is known as Longbenton High School.

Library

The library was the only room that can be used exclusively by Longbenton High School students. It has computers and a wide range of reading material.
