Long Stairs

The historic Long Stairs in Newcastle start on the Close between the 15th century Cooperage and 16th century “Buttress” merchant’s house, leading up to Queen's Lane, which continues on to Castle Grath. Documented in the 13th century, later known as the 'Langstare', the stairs linked the Close with the upper part of the medieval town.[1] They have been heavily modified over time, but old sections of walls remain alongside and at the top of the Stairs. The Long Stairs are on the Local List of buildings of Local Architectural or Historic Interest ('Local List') for Newcastle.

The Long Stairs are said to be haunted by the spirit of Henry Hardwick, who was thrown down the stairs to his death by a press gang in the 16th century, when he refused to work on their ships.
