Lime Kilns, Marsden

Marsden Lime Kilns are located off the Coast Road near Marsden Quarry in South Shields. The massive battery of 15 lime kilns were built in the c.1870s in association with Marsden Quarry and Whitburn Colliery. Limestone from the quarry and coal from the colliery were fed into the top of the kilns and heated to produce lime for use in agriculture and in the steel & chemical industries. The lime was loaded onto railway wagons (known as the “Marsden Rattler”) and transported to the docks at South Shields. In 2016 major conservation work began to preserve the kilns; a joint initiative of Historic England and the Owen Pugh Group (owners of Marsden Quarry).[1] The kilns are a Scheduled Monument.
