Watch House Museum
The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade, founded in 1864, was the first such organisation in the country. The Watch House was built 1886-1887 overlooking the Black Midden rocks in the mouth of the River Tyne, on which many ships were wrecked and lives lost. The watch house served as a look-out post and the aim was to save lives by firing rocket-borne lines to shipwrecks to rescue sailors and passengers.[1] Today the building is still in use by the Brigade and also includes a museum for visitors. The building and museum had a major restoration in 2014/15 for the 150th anniversary of the Brigade.[2] It is located by the Spanish Battery in Tynemouth, close to the Collingwood Monument. The Watch House is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
