Lady Greys / No 20, Shakespeare Street, Newcastle

No. 20, Shakespeare Street in Newcastle was built c.1836, probably by John Wardle, for Richard Grainger as part of the redevelopment of the centre of Newcastle, from 1824 to 1841. It was originally housing over 4 floors, with a 5th floor added later. The ground floor frontage dates from c.1900, around which time the building was the Ducrow Inn. Then, for many years, the ground floor was the Adephi Hotel, later the Adephi (bar). The ground floor is now Lady Greys (bar) and above this are the Adelphi Chambers, which host a number of businesses and offices. The building is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
