Hanging Gardens, Close
The Hanging Gardens (now closed to the public) are a landscaped area on the steeply sloping bank running from Hanover Street down to Close, in Newcastle. The gardens were developed in the early 1990s by Anthony Walker and Partners on what had become a derelict site. The tiers are constructed from brick walls and hold areas of trees, bushes and ferns as well as grassed spaces. Breakneck Stairs, follow the route of the medieval Town Wall, run down through the gardens. The Hanging gardens won the Landscape Institute National Design award in 1993. The gardens are on the Local List of buildings of Local Architectural or Historic Interest ('Local List') for Newcastle.
