Grainger Street


Grainger Street is one of the main streets in Newcastle, named after Richard Grainger, built as part of his redevelopment of the city centre 1824-1841. The street joins Grey Street at the Monument and was designed to provide a direct link with the Bigg Market and has entrances to the indoor Grainger Market. The section of Grainger Street beyond the Bigg Market was known St. John's Lane until 1869 when it was modified to improve the route to the Central Station. There are many notable buildings on Grainger Street including the Central Exchange Buildings, Central Arcade, and St John the Baptist Church. The upper section of Grainger Street was pedestrianised in 1998.
