Former Tram Depot, London Road, Carlisle


No. 127 London Road in Carlisle is a former tram depot of The City of Carlisle Electric Tramways Co. Ltd. The building here on London Road is currently Enterprise rent-a-car and was previously HSS Hire Shop.
The City of Carlisle Electric Tramways Co. Ltd operated an electric tramway service in Carlisle from 1900 to 1931. The system comprised 6 lines radiating from Carlisle Citadel Station to Newtown, Stanwix, along Warwick Road to Petteril Bridge, London Road, Boundary Road and Denton Holme. By the time of the First World War, the owning company was unable to expand the services to meet the needs of an growing city, and had started its own motorbuses services. In 1926 the company became Carlisle and District Transport Company.[1]
