Former Bonded Warehouses
The former bonded warehouses on Hannover Street, which have taller fronts on Close (street), were built for Amor Spoor in 1841-1844. The warehouses were abandoned in the late 1970s. Later, three serious fires here destroyed much of the original buildings. A fire in 1997 irreparably damaged the western warehouse, which had to be demolished. However, the exteriors of the remaining warehouses were incorporated, along with neighbouring new-builds, into apartments in 2008. The former bonded warehouses are Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. A bonded warehouse is a secure space for storing goods still liable to import duty and other taxes.
