Fleming Memorial Hospital (1888 - 1988)

The Fleming (business centre) is located off Burdon Terrace in Jesmond, Newcastle. It was originally Fleming Memorial Hospital, which was officially opened by Lord Armstrong in September 1888. The hospital for sick children was designed by John Quilter and George Wheelhouse, paid for by John Fleming. It was built to replace an earlier children's hospital which had been established in Hanover Square in 1863. The new building has two dated foundation stones, one laid by Lady Armstrong, with names of professionals, and the other recording John Flemming, the benefactor, and dedication to his wife "in the Jubilee year of the reign of Her Majesty Queen Victoria in memory of Mary his loving wife who died 7th March 1882." The hospital closed in 1988, when children's services transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary. In 2019, the building was converted for commercial use as a business centre, with 6 wings, hosting the Adderstone Group (owners) and a range of leisure, medical, and professional services and practitioners. The building is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
