Exchange Buildings

Exchange Buildings is a large block, incorporating No. 9-15 Lombard Street, No. 9 Quayside, No. 16 Queen Street and Nos. 6-10 King Street. Circa 1858 - 1861, completed by William Parnell. The site had become available as previous buildings here were destroyed by the Great Fire of Gateshead and Newcastle in 1854. The new building was intended to house offices of the numerous shipping companies, importers and exporters and coal merchants whose premises had been destroyed by the Great Fire. It would also contain a hotel. The Exchange Buildings opened in 1861. The Queen's Hotel, within the Buildings, run by Thomas Stephenson & Co., opened in 1864, but this closed in 1888. The buildings are Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. Today, Exchange Buildings are owned by Union Retail Properties Ltd. The property is split and let across 3 different tenants with long leases. It underwent major redevelopment and now comprises a Premier Inn Hotel, providing 136 ensuite bedrooms, together with a Slug and Lettuce public house, and Bar 38.
