Ethel Williams Hall, Front Street

Ethel Williams Hall is located on Front Street in Benton. The house was built in c.1734 for C. Hayton. The building was used as a vicarage and then as Northern Counties Orphanage, during the 20th century. Later, the building formed part of the Ethel Williams Hall complex, a halls of residence established by Newcastle University in 1950, named after Dr Ethel Williams, Newcastle’s first woman doctor. The halls of residence closed in the late 1990s and the newer buildings were demolished for the Williams Park residential development. However, this building and North House (next door) were converted back to private residences. Ethel Williams Hall is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
