Ebchester Roman Fort (Vindomora)

Map of the Vindomora Scheduled Monument area.

The site of Vindomora Roman Fort is located in the heart of Ebchester in County Durham. There are no obvious visible remains, however, excavations found the remains of a Roman fort of two main phases of occupation; dating from AD 69 to AD 117, and from circa AD 150 to the end of the 4th century. It was initially built in timber and later in stone. There was probably also a significant vicus (civilian settlement). The Fort is thought to have played a role in guarding Dere Street (Roman Road) near it's bridge across the River Derwent. The site is a Scheduled Monument, dissected by the A694 road, at this point named Vindomora Road in recognition of it's Roman past.
