Cross House, The Green, Wallsend

Cross House is located on The Green in Wallsend. Dame Eleanor Allan (founder of Dame Allan's school in Newcastle) taught for short period in the house. then, in 1748, it officially became the village school when the buildings was gifted to the village by Isabel Stewart, daughter of James Moncaster of Newcastle and Wallsend. Jasmine House, next door, was the former schoolmaster's house. Following the dereliction of Holy Cross Church, Cross House was also temporarily used as a church, from 1804, until 1809, when St. Peter's Church opened. Robert Stephenson was baptised here on 22nd January 1804.[1] Cross House reverted to use as private dwelling in 1835. It is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England.
