Croft Street
Croft Street in Newcastle city centre is located off the east end of Market Street and near Cariol Square. Croft Street is notable for Plummer Tower, which was part of the medieval Town Wall. There was once a field belonging to the Carliol family known as Carliol Croft near here, bounded by the Town Wall, before the sections of the wall here were demolished.[1] This is likely where the name of Croft Street originated. The street layouts and buildings in this part of Newcastle changed considerably with the mid 19th century redevelopment of the city centre and 20th century developments, including the building of the Central Motorway. One of the buildings cleared was the Burton House Pub, originally built in the 1890s, demolished 1989.[2] In the past there was a brewery on Croft Street; William Miller began brewing at the 'Stag Brewery' around 1850.[3]
